Felt is one of the oldest fabrics known to man. For thousands of years, all over the world, felt has been used for apparel, art, furnishing and construction. Nowadays, due to its versatility, felt is being used in an endless number of applications through all industries.
Felt can be produced from natural fibres, like wool, or from synthetic fibres and depending on its application there are several felting methods which are generally divided into three categories” Press Felting, Needle Felting and Wet Felting.
At ZÜS we make all our products from start to finish by hand using the wet-felting technique. Wet-felting means that you shrink wool with the help of warm water, soap and a lot of physical power from the loose hair into the final product. The density (and thus durability) of the resulting felt mainly depends on the amount of time and force you apply while shrinking the product.
Even though this is a very labour intensive process, this method produces a very strong felt while at the same time keeping the softness of the natural wool.
We use 100% natural wool to craft all our items in our studio in Kyoto. Our goal is to create products for everyday use that are durable and make you joy for many years!
